3.0 PRACTICE OF BEEKEEPING

The candidate will be:

3.16 able to state the risks in transporting live honey bee colonies;

NOTES

Hives need to be securely fastened (see study notes 3.15) so that bees can’t escape during transport. Angry bees in a closed vehicle is not a happy combination.

Ventilation must be provided if the hives are to be moved any distance otherwise the bees will overheat. You can use a custom travelling screen of fine mesh that replaces the crown board, or if the hive has a mesh varroa floor this might be enough. If it is a warm day or a long journey it might be necessary to mist spray the bees with water from time to time.

Try to minimise sharp braking or cornering to avoid frames moving in the hive and squashing bees.
