5.0 DISEASES, POISONING AND PESTS

The candidate will be:

 5.9 able to describe how comb can be stored to prevent wax moth damage;

NOTES

Wax moths can be killed by freezing, so storage in a freezer would be possible but not very practical for large amounts of comb.

The moths prefer darkness and do not like cold so the best practical option for storage is outside. Use a crown board top and bottom of a stack with a roof to keep them dry.

Acetic acid can be used to fumigate frames before storage.

There is a commercial product that can be sprayed on combs to protect them. This contains a bacterium that kills the moth but is harmless to bees (and humans).
