3.0 PRACTICE OF BEEKEEPING

The candidate will be:

3.2 able to describe the precautions which should be taken to avoid the honeybees being a nuisance to neighbours and livestock;

NOTES

The primary precaution to avoid bees becoming a nuisance is having a well planned apiary site (study_notes_3_1).

Make sure flight paths are away from areas used by people or animals, put screening in place to make the bees fly up and away.

Use strong fences to keep livestock away from hives.

A further precaution would be to use bees from colonies known to be “good tempered” and by requeening problem hives.

If there is a serious problem of nuisance then removing hives altogether should be considered.
