3.0 PRACTICE OF BEEKEEPING

The candidate will be:

3.8 able to give an account of an elementary method of producing a new queen;

NOTES

Removing the old queen from a hive is the most elementary method of producing a new queen.

If you remove the queen then the workers bees will make “emergency” queens. They do this by feeding royal jelly to larvae that are less than 3 days old. It is the diet of pure royal jelly that switches on the genes that means the larva develops into a queen rather than a worker.
